Emma Weinstein is a New York based theatre and film director, focusing on devised and immersive theatre. In New York City, Emma's work has been seen at The Glasshouse Project, The 52nd Street Project, Dixon Place, The Alchemical Theatre, The Emerging Artists Theatre, Paradise Factory, The Galapagos Space, The Wild Project and regionally at the Access Theatre and Theatre Off Jackson in Seattle, Refuge PDX in Portland Oregon, The Hallie Flanagan Studio Theatre in Northampton, The Gorilla Tango Theatre in Chicago, the Washington DC Arts Center, The Davis Square Theatre in Boston and The Haymarket Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska. She attended LaMama’s International Director’s Symposium in Spoleto, Italy,  La Muse Artist Retreat in Carcassone, France and the Chicago Directors Lab. Emma is the two-time recipient of the The Samuel A. Eliot, Jr./Julia Heflin Award for Distinguished Directing and the Bernhardt Brueger Prize.  Emma assisted Barry Edelstein at The Old Globe, Tony Simotes at Shakespeare and Compay and Sheryl Kaller at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center. Emma is currently working on a new commission for Working Theatre that she will write and direct about the racial history of Detroit. Emma graduated Summa Cum Laude from Smith College and attended the National Theatre Institute at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre Center. Emma is an alumna of the Drama League Directors Project and is a New Georges Associate Artist. Emma is the Cullman Scholar in Yale School of Drama's MFA Directing Class of 2019.

 

As an educator, Emma co-created the Guerrilla Filmmaking Program for Teens and has worked with organizations such as The New Generation Theatre Ensemble and The 52nd Street Project. Emma was a Fall Festival Director for Shakespeare & Company and has directed in their Shakespeare in the Courts program for adjudicated youth.
